Canines on Casters
You don’t often put casters and dogs in the same sentence, but if you run a business or organization that keeps multiple dogs on site, you know how important it is to be able to easily move the cages that dogs are kept in. Connecting the dots, its casters that keep those cages moving. In this edition of Wheels Revealed we look at kennel casters.
animal shelters, boarding kennels and grooming shops all have multiple dogs on site. In fact, some shelters in large North American cities house well over 10,000 dogs per month. That volume requires that cage placement configurations are modular, so that cages can be moved to accommodate different numbers of dogs as well as dogs of different sizes.
Casters used in these environments have to easily attach to the wire cage frame. Larger dogs need larger cages and sometimes that means that a cage can measure over 36” and requires six casters. Some dogs can weigh up to 200 lbs. and when cages are stacked, that could require casters with capacity of more than 100 lbs. each.
Clearly kennel casters
need to have easy maneuverability. What goes hand in hand with the movement is that cages also need to be completely stationary at times, making locking casters a necessity. Also, shelters and boarding facilities try to maintain a calm, quiet environment. Casters that absorb noise assist with that.
There is also lots of hair
and debris in these environments. Caster need to resist debris and are often equipped with thread guards or dust caps. The other by-product of the dirt and hair is that cages need to be frequently washed down. Rust resistant stainless steel casters can be a necessity.
