Start with the equipment, cart, rack, or machinery being moved. A light cart used indoors does not need the same caster as heavy industrial equipment or a high-capacity material handling cart.

2. How much weight will it carry?

Load capacity is one of the most important factors. The caster or wheel must be rated to support the total load, including the weight of the equipment and anything it carries.

For casters, the total load is typically divided across the number of casters being used. It is also smart to account for uneven floors, impact, and real-world working conditions.

3. What floor surface will it roll on?

Floor surface affects rolling performance, wheel wear, noise, and safety.

Common surfaces include:

  • Smooth concrete
  • Rough concrete
  • Tile
  • Epoxy or coated floors
  • Wet floors
  • Outdoor or uneven surfaces

4. Will the equipment need to turn?
